Ariana Grande is embracing her small stature.
The Wicked star and two-time Grammy winner became the latest artist to try out Jimmy Kimmel Live’s hilarious “Wing It & Sing It” segment, which sees an unsuspecting musician perform a wonderfully absurd song off the cuff without seeing its lyrics beforehand. And as it turns out, Grande’s version was all about the joys of being very, very petite.
“I am a strong, successful woman who always stands up tall even though I am in fact …” Grande began, reading cue cards held up by host Jimmy Kimmel. She paused, however, after realizing where this was heading. “Oh no. Oh God,” she said, before singing, “So very, very small.”
Ariana Grande performs a surprise song on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’.
Just how small is Grande, you might ask? Well, according to Google, she’s 5 feet 1 inch tall. But in Kimmel’s song… “I am a human baby carrot. I’m a lady Pikachu,” she sang. “I am little. I am tiny. I am the perfect bite-sized snack. Ten of me stacked up only equals one of Shaq.”
And it just kept going. “It’s going still, it’s long as [f—],” she said, mouthing the last word to the audience.
Still, the song’s lyrics caused her to burst into laughter on several occasions during the performance, especially after singing that she used a sock for a bed. “And yes my name is Grande. It’s ironic that I’m small,” Grande continued. “People ask me, ‘Where is your mom?’ when walking through the mall.”
Channeling the perennial Disney earworm “It’s A Small World” for the grand(e) finale, Grande stood on a chair as she sang, “There’s so much that we share when I climb on a chair. It’s a small world after all.”
She later reflected on the experience while sitting down with Kimmel for her interview. “Thank you — that was terrifying,” she said. “It was so much fun and absolutely insane. That was hilarious.”
And, to the song’s credit, she agreed there were some benefits to being small. “It is convenient when traveling, yeah,” she teased. “I mean, even glove compartments. Just dive on in. I’m kidding!”
