Elon Musk has suggested he will consult with the President about a proposal to distribute refund checks funded by DOGE savings.

If the DOGE reaches its $2 trillion savings target, households could receive up to $5,000 each. However, significant challenges could stand in the way of making this plan a reality.

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force claims it is significantly cutting federal spending, aiming to ease the national deficit.

However, Musk is now considering a different approach—redirecting some of those savings to provide rebate checks for American households.

On Tuesday afternoon, Musk responded to a post on Twitter/X suggesting a “DOGE Dividend” by saying he would “check with the President” about the idea. The post he replied to came from James Fishback, CEO and co-founder of Azoria, a right-leaning investment firm.

According to Fishback’s calculations, if DOGE reaches its projected $2 trillion in savings, a 20% cut of that amount could be distributed to American households. That would result in checks of $5,000 per household, which Fishback suggests could be sent out after DOGE expires next July.

However, it’s important to note that Musk has backtracked on that $2 trillion savings estimate in recent weeks.

Even if DOGE successfully reaches the $2 trillion savings goal, it remains unclear whether these rebate checks could legally be issued without Congressional approval.

While Congress often aligns with President Donald Trump’s priorities, some Republican lawmakers would rather see any budget savings put toward reducing the national debt or extending upcoming tax cuts instead of issuing direct payments to citizens.

While the idea of a $5,000 rebate check is likely to generate excitement, there are still major obstacles that could prevent it from becoming a reality. Elon is highly enthusiastic about the idea, and with President Trump also in favor, it remains a strong possibility.
