CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Six federal buildings in Central Illinois may close soon due to budget cuts.

The Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, has been cutting spending by ending leases in every state. This week, it announced more cuts with nearly 750 real estate leases across the country on the chopping block, including four buildings in Springfield and two in Champaign.

U of I professor gives insight on DOGE cuts, what to expectAccording to DOGE, this is approximately 10% of the entire federal government’s own real estate.

In a statement posted by the General Services Administration, courthouses, land ports of entry, and facilities critical to our national defense and law enforcement will all be kept as “core assets”. Officials consider many offices and have evaluated many of them to be “functionally obsolete.”

“GSA will consider non-core assets for divestment from government ownership in an orderly fashion to ensure taxpayers no longer pay for empty and underutilized federal office space, or the significant maintenance costs associated with long-term building ownership — potentially saving more than $430 million in annual operating costs,” part of the statement reads.

Should you expect a check from Elon Musk’s DOGE cuts? The Hill reported GSA listed more than 400 of the properties for sale. That list was taken down according to the Washington Post Wednesday. GSA’s list of properties for sale is “coming soon” , according to the website.
