The family of Matt Pinfield, the radio host and former MTV VJ who suffered a massive stroke that left him hospitalized in January — is involved in a legal battle over his conservatorship.

According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Pinfield’s 38-year-old daughter Jessica Pinfield has filed for conservatorship of her father, 63.

But his girlfriend Kara Brown and his brother Glenn Pinfield are now alleging that Jessica is attempting to isolate Matt from the rest of his family. TMZ was the first to report news of the family at odds.

The opposition filing — which was filed to a Superior Court in Los Angeles by attorneys for Brown and Glenn on Friday, Feb. 7 — states that Jessica filed for conservatorship soon after Matt was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 6. Glenn and Brown asked a Los Angeles County judge to deny Jessica’s petition for conservatorship.

Jessica, who had argued in her original filing that she worried that Brown had taken control of Matt’s bank accounts and apartment, wanted to file for conservatorship to protect his property and accounts. She also said that her father was “incompetent to make decisions” due to his current health conditions following his stroke.

Glenn and Brown claim that Brown — who stated she lived with Matt for two years and has been dating him for three years — had been by his side since the day he was admitted to the hospital after a fall, and that he was “lucid and engaged — both with me and with hospital staff” when he designated Brown as his emergency contact and personal representative.

“I spent most of my time during the first week of Matt’s hospitalization at his bedside. At that time, he was talking to me in full sentences,” Brown stated in the opposition filing. “His doctor went over his MRI with me in detail and we were encouraged at that time that Matt would make a full recovery. I was led to believe he would be discharged within a few weeks.”

According to Brown, Jessica was visiting the hospital on Jan. 14 when she “unprompted, accused me of being on drugs and blaming me for Matt’s stroke.”

“These accusations are untrue. I felt it was Jessica’s intention here to destroy my credibility with the hospital staff. Rather than argue, I left the hospital in deference to Jessica,” she stated in the filing.

On Jan. 16, Brown alleged that she was asked to leave the hospital and was told by security staff that her visitation rights had been rescinded. “I was not told why,” Brown added, noting that she wasn’t able to get any further updates on her boyfriend’s condition after that incident.

Per the filing, Brown learned Matt’s condition had changed from “good to poor.”

“This was heartbreaking for me and made worse by the lack of available, reliable information about Matt’s condition. I was told he had contracted MRSA/pneumonia, which had become life threatening and that he did not have a ‘massive’ stroke as Jessica claimed. This conflicting information has left me very confused,” she said.

Glenn also claimed in the filing that Jessica is ill-equipped to serve as conservator and has blindsided the rest of their family — including Brown, Glenn, Matt’s sister Colleen, mother Nancy and his other daughter Maya — by not telling them that she had filed for a conservatorship and keeping medical information from them.

Jessica was previously appointed temporary conservator, per TMZ, and Glenn and Brown have asked the judge to either deny her request for full conservatorship or to allow for more time for them to determine the best arrangement for their family.

The radio DJ’s health emergency occurred the night of Jan. 6 as a result of previous health issues, Rolling Stone reported last month.

On Jan. 7, KCSN — the local Los Angeles radio station where Matt hosted a show — released a statement revealing that he would be temporarily stepping back from his hosting duties amid his health issues.

“The SoCal Sound’s legendary DJ Matt Pinfield will take a temporary leave of absence for personal reasons,” the station’s Facebook post said. “We fully support Matt and hope to have his energetic rock n’ roll knowledge back on the air soon.”

Additionally, KLOS — another radio show Matt hosted — shared a statement wishing him well on his road to recovery.

“Everyone at KLOS & Meruelo Media, along with Matt’s family (daughters Jessica and Maya, brother Glenn, sister Colleen, mother Nancy), his girlfriend Kara, and the entire rock and roll universe support Matt in taking some time off to rest and heal,” the company said. “Matt is a family member, and we look forward to having him back on the KLOS airwaves as soon as possible. We know his fans across the country and all the artists feel the same way.”

Matt started out on MTV in 1992 after appearing on an episode of The Real World. In 1995, he was brought on to host MTV’s 120 Minutes, a show about artists of the alternative music genre.

He later went on to host a number of MTV shows including, MattRockPinfield SuitePinfield PresentsRocks OffSay What? and MTV Live.

In 2016, Matt published a memoir about his career: All These Things That I’ve Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life.

In his final Instagram post in January before having a stroke, Matt wrote, “Starting another week with gratitude for a life surrounded by great people, life changing music, and unforgettable experiences that I never take for granted. Here to another week-another day-open heart and open mind. Let’s rock!”
