1. The king gave up the throne for love

King Edward VIII ascended the throne in 1936, but he decided to abdicate the following year so he could marry Wallis Simpson. When the king announced that he would marry the twice-divorced American, there was a social and political uproar in England because the British royal family considered the marriage to be against religion and morality. The Church of England strongly opposed it and forced Edward VIII to abdicate. The huge royal scandal completely changed the line of succession and eventually decided that 10-year-old Princess Elizabeth would become the future Queen of England.

Fans of The Crown say that Edward VIII and his wife, Wallis Simpson, were known for their many meetings with Adolf Hitler. British intelligence had reason to believe that Wallis Simpson secretly passed information to the Nazi leader from documents that Edward VIII had not protected. The British government took steps to hide the illicit relationship, but a 1957 document implicitly confirmed it.

At the age of 14, Prince Charles ordered a very strong cherry brandy in a pub in the village of Stornoway Harbour. But apparently he was too young to realise that there was a tabloid reporter in the pub who had seen it all. The innocent prince recalled the incident in an interview with  Vanity Fair:  “I ordered the first drink that came to my mind, because I had had it before, when it was cold.” The incident became a scandal for the British royal family and appeared in almost every tabloid.

After admitting to his father, Prince Charles, that he had tried cannabis several times and was drinking alcohol despite being underage, the 17-year-old prince was immediately sent to a drug rehabilitation clinic for a day. An official at St. James’s Palace said it was a way to “learn about the possible consequences of starting to use cannabis.”

After her breakup with her ex-lover Peter Townsend, Princess Margaret married a photographer named Antony Armstrong-Jones. In 1976, the marriage was officially dissolved and Buckingham Palace released a statement: “The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, and the Earl of Snowdon have separated. The Princess will carry out her public duties without King Snowdon. There are no current plans for divorce.” However, in 1978, she was officially divorced, becoming the first person in British royal history to divorce since King Henry VII in the 1500s.
