Royal fans are furious at Meghan Markle’s latest revelation after she insisted that her surname is ‘Sussex,’ despite the fact that she seems to have only visited the English county once and has no official surname as a member of the Royal Family.

The Duchess of Sussex, 43, corrected her celebrity friend Mindy Kaling during the second episode of her Netflix cookery show, With Love, Meghan, which dropped on Tuesday.

In the episode, Meghan and Kaling, shared a light-hearted moment as they chatted about their childhoods while assembling cucumber sandwiches.

The two bonded over their shared love of fast food, with Meghan revealing her go-to spots as a ‘latchkey kid’ were chains like Pollo Loco, Taco Bell, and Jack In The Box.

However, Kaling seemed to get under Meghan’s skin when she quipped, ‘I don’t think anyone in the world knows that Meghan Markle has eaten Jack In The Box and loves it.’

Trying to mask her irritation with a forced smile, Meghan quickly corrected Kaling, saying, ‘It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.’

The awkward exchange continued as Meghan elaborated: ‘You have kids and you go “No, I share my name with my children”.

‘I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me but it just means so much to go “This is OUR family name. Our little family name”.’

Kaling, clearly caught off guard by the correction, awkwardly responded, ‘Well, now I know and I love it.’

The Duchess’s insistence on using her title as a surname has caused a stir among royal fans, with many questioning her decision to adopt ‘Sussex’ as her family name, despite the couple’s limited connection to the county.

One royal fan mused: ‘Her name is NOT Meghan Sussex. Her name is technically Rachel Mountbatten-Windsor. Sussex is a county in England & part of a courtesy title-NOT her last name.’

Another added: ‘Meghan Markle married Henry Mountbatten Windsor not Harry Sussex! She’s a delusional woman.’

While a third was shocked at how Meghan had hit out at her friend: ‘So who criticizes a guest like that? And her last name is not Sussex. Wouldn’t it be Mountbatten-Windsor?’

A fourth wrote: ‘”Duchess of Sussex” is a courtesy title she holds only through her marriage. It is not her surname and I’m quite sure she doesn’t have ‘”Meghan Sussex” on her California drivers license. Legally her last name should be Mountbatten-Windsor.’

While Meghan and Prince Harry have only visited Sussex once since receiving the Duke and Duchess titles in 2018, Meghan has repeatedly referred to ‘Sussex’ as part of her and Harry’s ‘love story’.

Speaking to People magazine ahead of the launch of her new show, Meghan revealed that the ‘Sussex’ name has taken on added significance since the birth of their children, Archie and Lilibet.

‘It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognised how meaningful that would be to me until we had children,’ Meghan explained.

‘I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.’

The Duchess, who dropped her maiden name of Markle when she married Prince Harry, further explained that, as a member of the Royal Family, she did not officially have a surname.

Instead, royals traditionally use their titles in place of surnames. This is why Meghan’s official title is ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.’

It has been well-documented that Meghan’s move away from royal duties and her relocation to California has led to calls for the Sussexes’ titles to be stripped.

Prince William and Princess Kate did the same thing for their children and George, Charlotte and Louis all used the surname Cambridge when they started school – their titles before the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Both brothers Harry and William used the surname Wales during their time at school, the Army and the RAF, the title held by Charles and Diana at the time.

Meghan said her new eight-part Netflix show, which launched today, had helped her to ‘find herself’ again.

But despite her huge two-million-strong following on social media, she insisted she instead saw as a ‘female founder’ and ‘entrepreneur’ rather than an influencer.

The series has been filmed inside an $8million (£5million) mansion on a sprawling estate just two miles from the Sussexes’ Montecito home.
