Guess they heard the president is a Chiefs fan?
The Philadelphia Eagles are celebrating their second Super Bowl championship in franchise history after their recent victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans earlier this month.
It was a dominant win for the Eagles, who went into the game as slight underdogs as the Chiefs sought to become the first team in history to win three Super Bowls in a row. And with President Donald Trump in attendance, he also became the first sitting president to attend the NFL’s biggest game (which is kind of surprising when you think about it…not one president has been to the Super Bowl during their time in office?)
Ahead of the game, Trump had predicted a Chiefs win – which wasn’t really a surprise after the support he received from Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, during the 2024 presidential election:
“I’ve watched this great quarterback, who has by the way a phenomenal wife, by the way. She’s a Trump fan, she’s a MAGA fan, so I happen to love her, ok? But she’s a great person. I watched her being interviewed, I said, ‘Boy, that’s pretty good.’
But she’s great. And he’s great.
I guess you have to say that when a quarterback wins as much as he’s won, I have to go with Kansas City. At the same time, Philadelphia has a fantastic – it’s going to be just a great game.”
And the president received a warm reception at the game, drawing massive cheers from the crowd when he was shown on the screen during the national anthem. But apparently the Eagles players aren’t so enthusiastic about the opportunity to meet with Trump…
Of course one of the traditions for the winning team after the Super Bowl is a visit to the White House. But according to a report from The Sun, the Eagles players overwhelmingly voted against accepting an invite from Trump to travel to Washington DC.
A source within the organization reportedly told The Sun that the conversation about a visit to the White House had already occurred within the team, and that “pretty much everyone” decided that they didn’t want to accept an invitation from Trump.
The Eagles also turned down the opportunity to visit the White House after their last Super Bowl win back in 2017, during President Trump’s first term. At the time, several members of the Eagles had knelt in protest during the national anthem, and Trump famously called for NFL team owners to fire any players who refused to stand for the anthem.
Of course most of those players from that Super Bowl win are no longer on the team, but apparently they still feel the same way.
The team has yet to publicly address the issue of a White House visit, but team owner Jeff Lurie is a vocal critic of Trump, and ahead of the game he refused to comment on whether they would accept an invitation from the president if they won the Super Bowl:
“I just want to win on Sunday.”
Honestly, it shouldn’t be a political thing to visit the White House after a Super Bowl win, no matter who’s in the Oval Office. It’s an honor for anybody to be invited, and obviously it’s not an endorsement of one side or the other to be honored for your accomplishments.
I guess the Eagles feel differently though. Which is a shame, because they’re missing out on one hell of a fast food spread…
